Mad Men star Christina Hendricks is ready to get back to work. After a long hiatus due to a dispute between AMC and the show’s creator, Matthew Weiner, the Emmy-nominated actress is happy to report that the cast will be back on set next month.
Hendricks, 35, who plays office bombshell Joan Holloway, has kept busy while show negotiations took place behind the scenes. In addition to filming two new movies, I Don’t Know How She Does It with Sarah Jessica Parker, and Drive with Ryan Gosling and Carrie Mulligan, she’s also teamed up with the Make-A-Wish Foundation and LATISSE to encourage women to help raise $500,000 so a wish can be granted in every Make-A-Wish chapter across the country.
The actress talked to Parade.com about getting back to the Mad Men set, and how her own childhood wish came true.
Heading back to the 1960s for season five.
“Yes, we’re going to get back to filming next month. We don’t have an exact date, but we’re all very anxious and excited. I want to get the show back on the air because I know lots of people are waiting!”
She had no doubt that the series would get back on track.
“I always had faith that everything was going to go fine. [Series creator] Matt Weiner is an incredible producer and writer and creator of our show. He’s very passionate about it and really held firm to what he wanted and what was best for the show. There wouldn’t be a show without him, so I knew it was going to work out. It just took a little while.”
Will both Christina (whose character learned she was pregnant during the season four finale) and co-star January Jones be sporting baby bumps this season?
“That’s a good question! I don’t know what’s going to happen yet. I know the writers are in the room working away and I’m going to go in and try to get some hints, but generally we don’t know what’s going to happen until we get that first script. So that makes me really excited to find out because I don’t even know.”
She didn’t expect her sex appeal to be a focus of Mad Men.
“When we did the pilot, that was not something that we discussed as a trait for Joan. This is something that’s developed as a combination of the costuming on the show, the hair and makeup, my portrayal of the role, and Matt’s writing. It all kind of came together and that became much more of a focus later. It was just something the audience brought attention to.”
She wants the attention on her talent, not her famous figure.
“I just have so many other things that I’m excited about. I’m really passionate about my acting and my career and the movies I’ve been working on.”
